DARPA has awarded a $25 million grant to build and deploy a suite of AI-based algorithms that can improve our understanding of the world around us.
The research was presented Monday at the International Conference on AI and Robotics in San Jose.
The goal is to bring AI to the “front of our minds,” said Rob Witman, DARPA program manager.
The goal is for these algorithms to be able to understand the way the world works and be able understand the ways in which we use the world to solve problems.
“We’re using AI to be a new way of understanding the world, to be aware of the ways we’re using the world,” Witman said.
“AI is a new kind of understanding of human nature.
We’re going to use it to build the kinds of systems that will understand and act on human behavior.”
The goal, as Witman puts it, is to build AI that is smarter than us.
In his speech, Witman described an AI system that is capable of building “the most beautiful sculpture in the world” — a robotic sculpture that he likened to a “sphinx” in its ability to manipulate the surface of a planet with ease.
“If you’re the artist, you’re able to control the size of the sculpture, you can control the shape of the face, the way it moves, the position of the eyes, the nose, the mouth, the ears, the limbs, and all of that,” Witmann said.
“So that means you’re basically able to get a robot to do the work for you, and that’s very different from a human being.
So, it’s very much different.”
Witman says the AI system, known as “Mink” is built to be smarter than humans.
That’s why he says Mink’s AI has the ability to make “a very elegant, precise, beautiful, complex, complex sculpture.”
“We’re actually building this piece to be the first sculpture to be made from scratch by human beings in a fully autonomous environment, in the context of a human,” Witmansaid.
Witmans speech came on the heels of a report from Bloomberg News that DARPA had awarded $20 million in grants for a new AI research program.
That report also identified an unnamed AI researcher who was working on the AI project as being a member of the “deep learning” team at DARPA.
A deep learning machine learning program is a machine learning algorithm that can learn from data in a way that computers can’t, and which can be trained to perform specific tasks by analyzing its input and its output.
The deep learning algorithm developed by DeepMind is able to learn from a large amount of data, said DARPA spokesman Paul Selby.
It can then use that data to improve itself, and can make predictions about how the world will evolve over time.
“This is the technology that’s powering the new world of AI, and it’s a huge opportunity for the US government,” Selby said.DARPA’s $25,000 award was part of a $2 billion funding push to fund research on AI.
It was the second time the government has awarded funding to advance AI.
In October, the government awarded $5.5 billion for a five-year funding program to develop and deploy AI systems that could help people navigate safely on the roads and deliver medicines faster.
The program will work with partners including the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, the U of T, the University of Waterloo and the University at Buffalo.
